History
Underwater Photographer of the Year is the world’s oldest underwater photography competition, with origins dating to 1965 when Phil Smith was the first honoree. It is organized by the British Society of Underwater Photographers (founded 1967).
The competition was revived in its modern form in 2014 by Alex Mustard, Dan Bolt, and Peter Rowlands. Alex Mustard serves as founder and chair of the jury.
UPY spans six decades of heritage and attracts entries from underwater photographers worldwide. Competition categories and winners are frequently discussed on Wetpixel.
