Canon D60
Manufacturer: Canon Type: Camera (DSLR) Year introduced: 2002 Resolution: 6.3 megapixels
Overview
The Canon D60 was a key early DSLR in the transition from film to digital underwater photography. Released in 2002, it was a significant step up from the Canon D30 and became the camera of choice for several pioneering digital underwater photographers, including Eric Cheng and Jim Watt.
The D60 was central to one of Wetpixel’s landmark early trips — the Bahamas 2002 expedition, where five Canon D60 units were in use ([1]). Eric Cheng used the D60 extensively, including for magazine cover shots, and later for large lightjet prints ([2], [3]). Jim Watt had already been shooting Canon digital underwater with the D30 in a UK Germany housing ([4]) and transitioned to the D60.
A pivotal moment for the D60’s legacy came when Douglas David Seifert used it to shoot the first digital cover of Dive Magazine, demonstrating that digital SLRs could match film quality for professional publication ([5]). Doug Perrine also used the Canon D60 for his Wildlife Photographer of the Year winning shots, further cementing the camera’s professional credentials ([6]).
