GoPro HERO Series

Manufacturer: GoPro Type: camera (action camera) Year introduced: 2011 (HD HERO2), 2012 (HERO3), 2013 (HERO3+)

Overview

The GoPro HERO series of wearable, mountable action cameras revolutionized underwater video by making high-quality HD capture accessible to a broad audience of divers, snorkelers, and water sports enthusiasts. The cameras’ compact size, rugged waterproof housing, and ultra-wide-angle lens made them particularly well-suited for underwater use.

HD HERO2 (October 2011)

The HD HERO2 featured a new processor with 2x the power of the original, an 11-megapixel sensor delivering more than double the image detail, and a redesigned wide-angle lens that was 2x sharper. It offered 1080p30, 720p60, and 960p48 video, plus 10-photo-per-second burst mode and 0.5-second timelapse intervals. Wi-Fi remote control and live streaming were announced as upcoming features. The camera retailed at $299.99 in three editions (Outdoor, Motorsports, Surf), all backwards-compatible with existing GoPro mounts ([1]).

HERO3 (October 2012)

The HERO3 was 30% smaller and 25% lighter than the HERO2, and was offered in three tiers: Black, Silver, and White. The Black Edition was the headliner, capable of capturing video at up to 4K resolution (at 15fps) — a first for any consumer camera at this price point. It also offered 2.7K at 30fps, 1080p at 60fps, 1440p at 48fps, 960p at 100fps, and 720p at 120fps, plus 11MP stills. Both Silver and Black editions featured manual white balance control, and the standard housing included a “Dive Lens” for underwater use. The Black Edition retailed at $399, Silver at $299, White at $199. The HERO3 received an Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for its contributions to filmmaking and television production ([2]).

HERO3+ (October 2013)

The HERO3+ refined the formula with a 20% smaller and lighter design, 30% better battery life, 4x faster Wi-Fi, a new sharper lens, and new capture modes. The Black Edition added SuperView (an immersive wide-angle mode) and Auto Low Light (intelligent frame rate adjustment for varying lighting). The Silver Edition gained 1080p60 and 720p120 capabilities. Black was $399.99, Silver $299.99 ([3]).
