Inon Z-330

Manufacturer: Inon Type: strobe Year introduced: 2017 (first shipping December 24, 2017) Guide number: GN 33 (vs GN 24 for Z-240) Coverage: 110°

Overview

The Inon Z-330 is the successor to the legendary Z-240, the industry-standard underwater strobe that Inon had produced for many years. The Z-330 offers a significantly higher guide number — GN 33 versus the Z-240’s GN 24 — representing roughly a one-stop increase in power, while maintaining a similar physical form factor. Coverage is achieved via a dome lens optical design.

The Z-240 was discontinued in June 2017 ([1]), with Inon citing the upcoming Z-330 as its replacement. The Z-240 had been so dominant in the category that its discontinuation was itself a notable editorial event — the end of an era for a strobe that had powered a generation of underwater photographers.

A sneak preview of the Z-330 was published in November 2017 ([2]), followed by full specification details in December ([3]), with first shipments on December 24, 2017.

Note on earlier source references: The task brief cited source articles from February and April 2016 (raw/articles/2016/02-19-inon-z-330-strobe.md and raw/articles/2016/04-27-inon-z330-review.md). These files do not appear to exist in the archive as of the current crawl. The Z-330 was widely understood to have been previewed/discussed from around this period, but no confirming source file has been located. Claims about 2016 coverage are therefore unverified.

Context: The Z-240’s legacy

The Z-240 was the dominant strobe for underwater photographers across most of the 2000s and 2010s. Its reliable fiber-optic triggering, balanced color temperature, and diffuser system made it the default choice for beginners and professionals alike. When Inon announced its discontinuation, it prompted discussion across the community about whether the Z-330 would maintain the ecosystem compatibility and reliability that had made the Z-240 ubiquitous. The Z-330 accepted the same fiber-optic cables and accessories, easing the transition.
