Nikon D200
Manufacturer: Nikon Type: DSLR camera Year introduced: 2005 Sensor: 10.2MP DX (APS-C)
Overview
The Nikon D200 was one of the most important cameras in the underwater photography world during 2006–2007, rivaling the earlier Nikon D100 as the most-housed camera of its era. Its pro-level build, 10.2MP sensor, and compatibility with a huge range of Nikon lenses made it the default choice for serious Nikon underwater photographers. At Boot Düsseldorf 2006 and throughout the year, virtually every major housing manufacturer raced to release D200 housings.
Housing availability
The D200 had exceptional housing support from:
- Aquatica — AD200 with slide-out camera tray, iTTL via Heinrichs Weikamp converter ([1])
- Ikelite — polycarbonate housing, fast to market ([2])
- Sea & Sea — DX-D200, aluminum front/polycarbonate rear ([3])
- Seacam — announced at ADEX 2006 ([4])
- Subal — previewed at Boot 2006 ([5])
- Sealux — CD200, detailed review ([6])
- Nexus — announced April 2006 ([7])
- Hugyfot — photos shown April 2006 ([8])
- Light & Motion — Titan D200 at $4,499 with USB control ([9])
- UK-Germany — reviewed by Mark Hoover ([10])
Notable
- The Fujifilm S5 Pro was physically identical to the D200 and fit the same housings, offering an alternative sensor for photographers who wanted the Super CCD’s dynamic range. Community tests by Claude Ruff showed no advantage for sunbursts underwater. ([11])
- Tim Rock documented switching from Canon back to Nikon specifically for the D200 and Aquatica AD200 system ([12])
