Overview

The Nikon Z7 was Nikon’s high-resolution full-frame mirrorless camera, announced alongside the more versatile Nikon Z6 as part of the new Z-mount system. With a 45.7-megapixel FX-format sensor (no optical low-pass filter) and 493 on-sensor phase-detect AF points covering 90% of the frame, the Z7 targeted photographers who demanded maximum detail. It offered 9 fps continuous shooting and an ISO range of 64-25,600 ([1]).

For underwater photographers, the Z7 shared all the advantages of the Z-mount system with the Z6: compatibility with F-mount lenses via the FTZ Adapter, 5-axis in-body vibration reduction, UHD 4K at 30fps with no field-of-view crop, and 10-bit N-log HDMI output. The Z7’s higher resolution made it particularly attractive for shooters producing large prints or needing extensive cropping capability. The identical body design to the Z6 meant the same housings served both cameras ([2]).

Like the Z6, the Z7 received the firmware 2.20 update in December 2019 adding CFexpress card support and optional ProRes RAW output ($199.95) via Atomos recorders ([3]).

Nikon Z 7II

In October 2020, Nikon announced the Z 7II with dual EXPEED 6 processors, bringing 10 fps shooting with 3.3x the buffer of the original Z7. It gained dual memory card slots (CFexpress + SD), improved low-light AF to -3 EV, and 4K 60p video. The Z 7II featured a 45.7MP BSI CMOS sensor with an “exceptionally clean” native ISO range from 64 to 25,600. Priced at $2,999.95, it shipped in December 2020 ([4]).

Housing Availability

The Z7 shares the same body as the Nikon Z6, so all housings are compatible with both cameras. See the Z6 page for the full housing list.
