Biography
Stan Waterman was a legendary underwater filmmaker and Emmy Award winner, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of underwater cinematography. He participated in the landmark documentary “Blue Water, White Death” alongside Rodney Fox, and was featured in Bret Gilliam’s “Diving Pioneers and Innovators” (2007) as one of the foundational figures in diving history.
Though not a digital shooter or active forum participant, Waterman was a revered elder statesman of the underwater imaging world, regularly covered by Wetpixel. He was seen at the SRI booth at Beneath the Sea 2004 ([2]) and was a presenter at the Boston Sea Rovers 51st Clinic in 2005, where he showed footage from Guadalupe great white shark encounters ([3]).
In his later career, Waterman shot with Sony HDV cameras in Gates housings, with Nancy McGee serving as his assistant. Gates hosted a private event at DEMA 2007 featuring Waterman’s HDV retrospective of his career highlights ([4]).
Waterman hosted the original “Sensational Seas” DVD (2004) alongside Cat Holloway, featuring footage from Howard Hall and others, with proceeds benefiting REEF ([5]). A sequel, “Sensational Seas 2,” was released in 2010 in collaboration with Annie Crawley, again benefiting REEF ([6]). He also led a humpback whale expedition to Tonga aboard the NAI’A liveaboard with Gates support ([7]).
Waterman published his autobiography, “Sea Salt — Memories & Essays,” in 2005 through New World Publications (288 pages). The book went through three printings and was released on iTunes in December 2010 ([8]).
His son Gar Waterman is a sculptor who creates nudibranch sculptures from Italian stone, interviewed by Wetpixel in 2012 ([9]).
