The Nikon Coolpix 950 launches, becoming one of the first digital compact cameras widely adopted by underwater photographers. The distinctive swivel-body design and available underwater housings from Ikelite and others mark the beginning of accessible digital underwater photography. Wetpixel.com begins publishing content, covering the DEMA trade show.

- 1999-12: DEMA 2000 in Las Vegas showcases early digital underwater housing prototypes from Aquatica (Nikon D1/F5), Ikelite (Coolpix 800/950, Kodak DC-290, Sony Mavica), EWA-Marine, Video-Sea (Olympus C2020), and Nexus. The nascent digital underwater photography market takes shape. ([1])
