Nikon D750
Manufacturer: Nikon Type: camera — full-frame DSLR (FX) Year introduced: 2014 Sensor: 24.3MP FX CMOS Price at launch: $2,299
Overview
The Nikon D750 is a 24.3-megapixel full-frame DSLR released in autumn 2014, positioned between the D610 and D810 in Nikon’s lineup. It offered a tilting LCD, built-in Wi-Fi, and what DxO testing showed to be slightly better dynamic range and noise performance at the pixel level than the D810, despite lower resolution. At 6.5fps and with improved autofocus relative to the D810, the D750 appealed to underwater photographers as a high-performance full-frame body at a more accessible price point.
Alex Mustard reviewed the D750 in November 2014, shooting it in the Red Sea on a workshop shortly after the housing became available — a pattern familiar from his earlier Nikon DX and FX reviews in the same waters ([1]). Mustard described the spec sheet as “very tempting indeed” and noted the DxO results favoring the D750 sensor over the D810 for dynamic range and noise at the pixel level. The review tested the camera with a Sigma 15mm lens and Nauticam 140mm dome port, evaluating performance for wide angle reef scenery, pelagics (oceanic whitetips, spinner dolphins, hammerheads), and available light.
The Nov 15 article by Mustard covering the Nauticam 140mm dome port also previewed D750 optical performance ([2]).
Housing race
Housing manufacturers moved rapidly to support the D750, with Ikelite first to announce (November 4, 2014, priced at $1,800), Nauticam announcing the NA-D750 on November 7 and shipping in time for Mustard’s Red Sea trip by November 17 (priced at $3,500), and Subal releasing the ND750 on December 30, 2014 / January 2015 (priced at $3,800).
