Sea & Sea YS-D2
Manufacturer: Sea & Sea Type: strobe Year introduced: 2015 Guide number: GN 32 (with diffuser) Key features: DS-TTL II, LED target light
Overview
The Sea & Sea YS-D2 is a TTL-capable underwater strobe announced in July 2015 ([1]). It supported Sea & Sea’s DS-TTL II protocol and included an integrated LED target light for focusing and framing in low-light conditions.
The YS-D2 entered the market with serious quality problems in its initial Chinese-manufactured version. Reports of reliability issues — including flooding, electronic failures, and inconsistent performance — circulated in the community and damaged the product’s reputation. Sea & Sea’s response was to develop a Japanese-manufactured replacement, the YS-D2J, released in October 2017 at $689.95 ([2]). The “J” designation explicitly signaled the change in manufacturing origin and was marketed as an acknowledgment of the quality problems with the original production run.
This situation was notable in the underwater photography industry as a public example of manufacturing quality control affecting a major product, and the YS-D2J release was positioned as a corrective action rather than a standard product refresh.
