Biography
Brian Skerry is one of the world’s leading underwater photojournalists, best known for his long-running association with National Geographic Magazine. He has been a contract photographer for NGM since 1998 and by 2015 was working on his 24th story for the magazine, with 20 of those assignments originating from his own proposals ([2]). As of 2012, his work had also appeared in Sports Illustrated, US News and World Report, BBC Wildlife, GEO, Smithsonian, Esquire, Audubon, and Men’s Journal ([3]).
Skerry typically spends eight to nine months per year in the field, with a normal assignment lasting 10-12 weeks divided into two or three trips ([4]). He has logged more than 10,000 hours underwater over the course of his career. For a single story, he may shoot 60,000 to 70,000 frames; under his National Geographic contract, he must deliver everything in RAW format and is not permitted to delete any images — the picture editor reviews every single frame ([5], [6]). No post-processing is permitted by the photographer; corrections are made at the magazine with a technician, limited to color and contrast adjustments, and every published image is compared against the original RAW file before publication ([7]).
He has cited David Doubilet, Bill Curtsinger, Flip Nicklin, and Luis Marden as key inspirations for his underwater photography career, and is also greatly inspired by terrestrial wildlife photographers Jim Brandenburg, Nick Nichols, and Chris Johns ([8]).
Skerry is described as a friend and Wetpixel member by Eric Cheng, who noted Skerry’s personal connection to the Wetpixel community ([9]).
Working Method
Skerry’s approach to underwater photography is consciously journalistic and story-driven. He describes a successful photojournalist as someone who “must be able to tell stories with pictures” and “see the bigger picture” beyond making eye-catching images ([10]). He typically researches a subject for months or even years before submitting a proposal to National Geographic, reading extensively and consulting scientists and experts ([11]).
The National Geographic editorial process, as Skerry describes it, is highly collaborative. Once a story is approved by a committee of executive staff, the photographer is assigned a photo editor who becomes a partner in the process. The editor reviews all frames (30,000-40,000 on a typical story), and together they narrow the selection to approximately 40 images for presentation to the editor-in-chief. If approved, these are further refined to the 10-15 images that form the published story. The photographer has input throughout, but stories can be killed at any point in the process ([12], [13]).
Skerry primarily shoots Nikon, though he has used Canon on specific projects ([14]). He went digital for his National Geographic assignments in 2005, adopting the Nikon D2X ([15]).
Conservation Advocacy
Conservation is central to Skerry’s work. He has stated: “Photography can absolutely be a force for positive change! Human beings are visual creatures, our brains process events as still frames that remain in our minds. Stacks of scientific papers might prove that we’re facing a problem, but a single iconic photograph can move people into taking action” ([16]).
His conservation-related work includes:
- TED talk (2010): Delivered a presentation at TED revealing the ocean’s “glory and horror,” making a powerful case for marine environment protection. The TED series, devoted to “ideas worth spreading,” has featured speakers including Al Gore, Jane Goodall, and Brian Greene ([17]).
- Global fisheries crisis (2007): Photographed a landmark 38-page National Geographic cover story on the global fish crisis (April 2007 issue), which prompted an appearance on ABC’s 20/20 with Diane Sawyer to discuss the crisis as part of Earth Day coverage ([18], [19]).
- Bite-Back shark conservation calendars (2008-2015): Contributed images to multiple annual Bite-Back marine conservation charity calendars alongside photographers including David Doubilet, Doug Perrine, Alex Mustard, Amos Nachoum, Jeff Rotman, and others ([20]).
- Smithsonian exhibition (2013): Featured in “Portraits of Planet Ocean: The Photography of Brian Skerry” at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, a 20-photograph exhibition celebrating the fifth anniversary of the Sant Ocean Hall. The exhibition documented both the beauty of marine life and the dramatic impacts of human activity on ocean ecosystems, drawing on his 30-year career ([21]).
- Shark conservation with Nat Geo (2016): Illustrated National Geographic’s “Summer of Sharks” multi-issue series covering tiger sharks, great white sharks, and oceanic whitetips, and appeared in a Nat Geo Wild broadcast, Mission Critical: Sharks under Attack, aimed at changing public perceptions of sharks ([22]).
- SeaLegacy (ongoing): Featured in “The Thin Blue Line,” a film by the conservation organization SeaLegacy alongside Paul Nicklen, David Doubilet, and Cristina Mittermeier, using “visual storytelling to turn the tide” on ocean threats ([23]).
He has identified climate change as perhaps the greatest threat to the oceans, noting effects including sea-level rise, coral bleaching, and acidification. He has also advocated for ending commercial fishing subsidies worldwide and creating more marine protected areas ([24]).
Books and Publications
- Successful Underwater Photography (2002, co-authored with Howard Hall) — An update to Hall’s underwater photography “bible.” Book signing held at Gates Underwater Products booth at DEMA 2002 ([25]).
- Ocean Soul (2012, National Geographic Books, 263 pages) — A career-spanning monograph divided into four chapters: “Warm Waters,” “Cool Waters,” “Cold Waters,” and “Pristine Waters.” Each chapter contains a photo-essay of a major National Geographic assignment plus additional images. Reviewed on Wetpixel by Adam Hanlon with an exclusive author interview. Priced at around $50 ([26]).
- Skerry authored five books total as of 2015, according to Nikon’s press release announcing his ambassadorship ([27]).
His portfolio in Fathoms Magazine issue #18 (2006) featured alongside Eric Cheng and Ethan Gordon, with digital photography tips by Berkley White ([28]).
Competition Success
- Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2008: Won first place, runner-up, and specially commended in the Underwater World category — a near-clean sweep of the category ([29]).
- Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2010: Received Highly Commended award in the One Earth category for an image of shark finning ([30]).
- Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2017: Won the Behaviour: Amphibians and Reptiles category with “The Ancient Ritual,” a long-exposure image of a leatherback turtle returning to the sea at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge, St. Croix. Shot with a Nikon D5 and 17-35mm lens at 24mm, 10 seconds at f/8, ISO 1600, with a Nikon flash at 1/64th power with tungsten gel ([31]).
- He served as a judge for the Our World Underwater photo competition alongside Alex Mustard, Eric Cheng, Berkley White, Keri Wilk, and Matt Weiss ([32], [33]).
- He served as a judge for the BigPicture 2016 Natural World Photography competition ([34]).
Major National Geographic Assignments
- Global fisheries crisis (April 2007): 38-page cover story on the decline of world fish stocks. Eric Cheng called it “thoroughly depressing” and a “MUST READ” ([35]). The same issue included a second Skerry story on Poor Knights Island, New Zealand ([36], community comment).
- Japan’s ocean wilderness (2008): National Geographic documented Skerry’s journey in an on-assignment blog, accompanied by photographer Mauricio Handler and translator Hiro Drogin ([37]).
- Mesoamerican Reef (October 2012): Story featuring challenging photography of spawning fish behavior at dusk — 10,000 fish rising in a column, shooting at high ISO with fill flash on “90-pound, fast-swimming mirrors at night” ([38]).
- Atlantic bluefin tuna (March 2014): Feature story with a striking photo of a wide-mouthed bluefin tuna selected as National Geographic’s Photo of the Day. Skerry described pursuing these animals for “almost two decades” before finally photographing them. The fish were nearly 10 feet long and weighed around 1,000 pounds ([39]).
- Dolphin intelligence (May 2015): Three-part series in National Geographic, the magazine’s first dolphin feature since Flip Nicklin’s 1992 story. Skerry worked in 9 locations across 4 countries over 16 weeks spread across 18 months, covering 5 species (bottlenose, dusky, spinner, spotted, and orca). Included first-ever still photographs of bottlenose dolphin mud-ring feeding in Florida, shot from 600+ feet altitude with a 500mm lens. The re-wilding story covered Indo-Pacific dolphins released from Seoul Zoo off Jeju Island, South Korea, that successfully returned to their birth pod ([40], [41]).
- Summer of Sharks (2016): Three-issue series covering tiger sharks at Tiger Beach (June), great whites off Cape Cod, and oceanic whitetips in the Bahamas ([42], [43]).
- Sea of Hope: America’s Underwater Treasures (February 2017): Featured the first known underwater photograph of a US president — Barack Obama snorkeling at Midway Atoll. President Obama told Skerry upon meeting him: “I know who he is, Pete. I’m a great admirer of your work, Brian.” The president was at Midway to highlight the expansion of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument ([44]).
- National Geographic Best of 2016 and 2017: Skerry’s shark images featured prominently in National Geographic’s annual best-underwater-images roundups alongside David Doubilet, Laurent Ballesta, Jennifer Hayes, and Thomas Peschak ([45], [46]).
