2021
Key events
2021 was the year the underwater photography industry began its post-COVID recovery, anchored by a string of landmark camera announcements: the Sony Alpha 1 (50MP, 30fps, 8K), Canon EOS R3, and Nikon Z 9 (the first mirrorless with no mechanical shutter). Sea & Sea was acquired by Fisheye Co. in a major consolidation, and Marelux emerged as a new housing manufacturer. “My Octopus Teacher” won the Academy Award for Best Documentary, bringing underwater cinematography to mainstream attention. The UN Decade of Ocean Science began, setting a conservation agenda for the following ten years. Wetpixel Live continued as a near-daily institution, surpassing 150 episodes by February. Conservation victories included the Galapagos Marine Reserve expanding by 45% at COP26, Hawaii banning shark fishing, and the UK banning shark fin imports.
