Biography

Craig Jones was the most prolific contributor to Wetpixel during its formative years (2002–2004), authoring 133 articles — 36 in 2002 and 86 of ~117 total articles in 2003. He functioned as the primary news editor alongside Eric Cheng and was instrumental in building Wetpixel’s content library during the critical early growth period when the community was documenting the film-to-digital transition in real time.

Jones was an underwater videographer by background who brought video editing expertise to a community focused primarily on still photography. He served as co-admin alongside Cheng and James Wiseman, and when Cheng and Wiseman traveled to the Fiji Digital Shootout 2004, Jones ran the site solo ([2]).

Contributions

Primary News Engine (2002–2004)

Jones authored the majority of articles during Wetpixel’s first three years. His 2003 output of 86 articles — covering gear announcements, housing reviews, show reports, competition results, and community news — constituted nearly three-quarters of everything published on the site that year.

Ambient Light Photography Pioneer

Authored the foundational article “Filters and Ambient Light Photography” (June 2003) explaining filter theory for underwater use ([3]). Co-authored a feature article on the technique with Alex Mustard, with images ([4]). James Wiseman’s 2007 complementary filter tutorial explicitly credited Jones’ 2003 work as the foundation for the technique that became Magic Filters ([5]).

Video Editing Tutorials (2003)

Published 4 tutorials on the same day covering directed fades with Pixelan SpiceMaster, silhouette color correction, flash removal using virtual clips, and channel mixer usage ([6]).

Site Building

Co-built Wetpixel v3.0 redesign with Cheng and Wiseman (January 2004) ([7]). Covered DEMA 2002, 2003, and 2004. Appointed Herb Ko as moderator (2003).

Later Contributions

Remained as moderator through at least 2009. Lent his Nikon D3 to Alex Mustard for the landmark D3 field review (2008). Participated in the Wetpixel Solomon Islands 2007 expedition aboard MV Bilikiki and the Ultimate Indonesia 2009 expedition (130+ dives over 40 days) with Cheng, Matt Segal, Cor Bosman, and Julie Edwards ([8], [9]).
